Employee Spotlight: Josh Hockenberry
Josh Hockenberry, Manager of Digital Media
You know our products, you know our tech… but do you know the people behind it all? Step into our Q’mmunity Corner and learn who’s who with our employee spotlight series. Today we’re featuring Josh Hockenberry, Manager of Digital Media based in ownerIQ’s Boston office.
What’s the first thing you do in the morning:
Check the Platform Health Dashboard, Grafana, and Looker.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Josh:
After I drive the kids to preschool/daycare, I drive into Boston. The commute can be long so I enjoy taking that time to catch up on my favorite podcasts. I listen to a variety of podcasts but I listen to The Daily, daily. Work is different day-to-day which makes
every day interesting. Most days are a mix of monitoring inventory scale and quality, managing relationships with our exchanges, working on projects and managing support cases. After work I head home and have dinner with the kids and then get them to bed. If I have any free time after that I normally spend it in the shop working a metal or woodworking project.
You’re most productive when…
I am able to go head-down and dive into a project.
What’s a big project you are working on right now?
How many browser tabs do you have open at any given time?
Oh god, don’t ask. Way too many. Normally over 30. I use one whole screen to monitor different Grafana charts… and I’m also awful about closing tabs.
Your desk: messy or neat?
I like to think of it as an organized mess.
Lunch: bring or buy?
If I have the time I love to take a walk and buy lunch, it breaks up the day.
What’s your favorite perk at the Q?
The craft beer fridge and flexible PTO.
Music while you work: yes or no?
What’s on your shuffle?
It varies widely. Rock, Hip-Hop, Blue Grass, Blues, Classical, Rap, and Industrial.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
It changed daily…
If money weren’t an object and you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
If money wasn’t an object and I could fly back home to see my extended family regularly… Alaska. My now-wife and I spent two weeks there. I proposed to her above the arctic circle, 200 miles from the arctic ocean when it was -33°.
You get around by: walking, driving, public transportation or a mix?
Tell us, mountain or beach?
When you’re not here, where are you?
Spending time with my kids, traveling, tinkering in the shop, working on the house, or tending to my bees.
If you have one then we’ve got to know… what’s your favorite Q Jay (Jay Habegger, CEO) moment?
The time that Marketing used an old photo of me clean-shaven in our company directory and Jay didn’t believe it was me. My headshot has since been updated. 🙂
Looking ahead – what most excites you most about 2019 and your work?
I am really excited about improving our cross device capabilities and leveraging additional inventory that opens up with our exchanges.
